Taekwondo events at FISU World University Games granted G4 ranking status

〈ROKNTV 한국뉴스티브이〉 채정희 편집국장 By Chief Editor CHAE JEONG-HUI = The World Taekwondo Council has unanimously approved granting G4 ranking event status to the Taekwondo competitions at the FISU World University Games.
The upgraded World Taekwondo ranking status applies to Poomsae, Individual Kyorugi and Team Kyorugi events at the FISU World University Games. The decision was taken during the World Taekwondo Council’s meeting in Chuncheon, Korea ahead of the World Taekwondo Junior Championships, and recognises the huge expansion and growth of Taekwondo in University sport. This follows nearly 40 years of development and collaboration between World Taekwondo and FISU.
Elevating Taekwondo’s ranking status from G2 to G4 at the FISU World University Games promises to ensure more of the world’s top athletes and Olympic hopefuls in the sport will participate at future editions.
World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue said: “This decision is another milestone for Taekwondo in University sport. “World Taekwondo’s relationship with FISU continues to go from strength-to-strength, and we recognise the significant value of FISU’s events including the World University Games in providing opportunities for student athletes.
FISU President Leonz Eder said: "We are glad to see the elevation of University Taekwondo to a G4 event. This recognition by World Taekwondo reflects the incredible growth and dedication within the university Taekwondo community over the past 40 years. By raising the level of competition, we are creating more opportunities for student athletes to thrive on the world stage. This achievement is a testament to the strong partnership between FISU and World Taekwondo, and our shared commitment to fostering excellence in university sports.“
In early July, FISU President Eder and Secretary General Eric Saintrond visited the World Taekwondo Headquarters in Seoul and its satellite office in Muju, and attended the Daegu 2024 World University Taekwondo Festival.
The two organisations discussed ways they could further vitalise Taekwondo’s important status in university sport and promote the philosophy of university sport.
